TAP Talk - Writing Through Recovery: Leveraging Clinical Tools for Narrative Justice

Our free TAP Talk for November features Dr. Mary Simmerling discussing “Writing Through Recovery: Leveraging Clinical Tools for Narrative Justice.”

“Writing Through Recovery” is an innovative, survivor-led writing workshop model that adapts the structure of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD into a non-clinical, community-based format grounded in narrative justice. Originally developed as a response to the limitations of formal trauma treatment, this program blends CPT-informed prompts with the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) methodology to provide trauma survivors with a safe, structured, and empowering path to reclaim their stories. Participants will explore how structured narrative writing can support long-term recovery, disrupt cycles of self-blame, and build sustainable survivor-centered spaces outside of clinical settings. This model can be adapted for advocates, shelters, reentry programs, law enforcement wellness teams, or survivor support initiatives.

Presenter Mary Simmerling holds an MA in psychology from Adler University and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Illinois.
