Speaker Chis Garwick-Foley, MA, LPC will present on “Grief & Loss - Adlerian Style” at the free monthly meeting.
• Grief is the natural, expected response to any loss, large or small. It becomes complicated grief when its effects last longer than three months following the loss. Alfred Adler saw that grief was an integral part of society and relationships. By understanding the personality (i.e., motivation for behavior, in Adlerian philosophy), one can best understand how to support, and indeed, process the effects of grief on the individual.
Goals/Objectives of the Presentation:
1. Participants will learn about the wide scope of events that can create grief.
2. Participants will learn about the three distinct types of grief.
3. Participants will learn about the array of things about which people grieve.
4. Participants will learn about grief behaviors of each personality type, as defined by Adler.
5. Participants will learn about the continuing effects of grief
About the presenter:
• Back in the days when electric typewriters were the high-tech method of preparing term papers, and college research was conducted with card files in musty libraries Chris earned her BA in Speech-Communications. During a 20-year period she lovingly refers to as her “past life," she worked in the field of publications marketing. After waking up one morning wondering why she had spent so much time in the field she decided to try to find out, and earned her MA in counseling and psychotherapy from Adler Graduate School.
• Changing careers was been one of the best decisions Chris has ever made! Each day she is fascinated, encouraged and energized by the work she is able to do with people who are stuck in their journey and willing to explore the way out.
• Currently, Chris has a remote private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Her practice is based on the knowledge that we are all holistic beings with physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions, dynamically interwoven to produce the unique individuals we are. Chris's passion is understanding and promoting the influence of bio-chemistry (nutritional and environmental factors) and physiology on behavior and, conversely, how one's belief systems influence one's physical health. Chris is certified in Interactive Guided Imagery (sm) and Thought Field Therapy. Chris also has additional training in behavioral nutrition, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR ), and NeuroModulation Technique therapy.
• Chris and her husband share their lives with four cats, (although the count, according to our most mature “housemate,” is three humans and three cats). They also find joy in their menagerie of urban wildlife who have made their yard home. They feel fortunate to be living in God's Backyard with the western shore of Lake Superior never too far away for a relaxing low-tech respite from big city life.
