TAP Talk: Counseling Caregivers: An Adlerian Approach

TRT Co-Chairs, Drs. Daniel and Jennifer Williamson will present on “Counseling Caregivers: An Adlerian Approach”

Rosalind Carter famously uttered “There are only four kinds of people in the world–those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 37.1 million eldercare providers in the U.S. age 15 and over which means that it is highly likely that caregiving will be a presenting stressor for those seeking counseling.  Counselors providing services to caregivers should be aware of their scope of practice as caregiving is a multifaceted and systematic activity.  It is easy for providers to move beyond their competency when attempting to help their clients.  Additionally, there are powerful tools that can be used as counselors help the clients to navigate the systems in which caregiving takes place.  This poster will explore the ethical and practical dilemmas associated with caregiving and provide clear tools for counselors to use when helping clients.  An Adlerian approach to counseling caregivers will be discussed.

Participants will be able to

-describe the scope of practice when counseling caregivers

-explain the dilemmas in providing caregiver counseling

-apply tools for helping caregivers as they attempt to care for aging loved ones

-identify caregiving strategies utilizing an Adlerian lens
